Leave A Gift In Your Will

Leaving a gift in your will to BGF is a way to ensure that our essential work can continue.

Bequests are a significant source of funding and we rely on this income to help us plan our work more effectively, reach out to help more people, but most importantly to help us continue our vital work

You can help people living with HIV by making a will or by making a change to your existing will.

Any gift large or small can have a huge impact on our work.  You can feel proud knowing that your forethought and generosity will help ease the suffering of others and improve the lives of men, women and children living with HIV in NSW.

So much can be achieved with your gift

Here are some examples of recent bequests:

The 1st in Australia

In 1993, because of a generous bequest, we were able to plan our first supported housing project, Bobby Goldsmith House (with help from the Department of Housing and the Department of Health).

The facility has 10 self-contained units with 24-hour residential care and support. It is the first of this type of accommodation to be offered in Australia for people living with advanced HIV.

Bobby Goldsmith House gives people the opportunity to live with security and independence near HIV treatment centres, with help on hand should they need it.

Every cent counts!

In 2008 one bequestor left BGF $1200 in their will.  This gift could pay for a years supply of HIV medications for 4 of the people we help.

Imagine how this gift could change the lives of 4 people - keeping them healthy, happy and active for 12 months!

Leaving money in your will is easy to do:

If you do not have a will - then seek independent legal advice or talk to the Public Trustee NSW

If you already have a will - then add a short legal amendment (see “If you are remembering BGF in your will” below).

There are many ways to leave money in your will (see below). However, the easiest way to do this is to leave a "residuary gift".  This is a specific sum of money or a percentage of funds that BGF would receive after your family, friends and other beneficiaries have been taken care of.

If you have any questions about wills, please call the Chief Executive Officer in confidence on (02) 9283 8666 or write to us at: BGF, PO Box 97, Darlinghurst, NSW 1300.

You can request The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation’s Guide to Wills and Bequests.  This booklet simply and easily sets out the steps you should take to create your own legal Will. It also covers how you can make a bequest to a charity such as the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.

You can download a copy of the BGF Bequests Brochure here or call the BGF office on 02 9283 8666 and ask to have a copy mailed to you. Please read on for more information on how to make a bequest to BGF.

Types of Gifts

Here are a few ways you can help BGF with a gift in your will:

The residue of the estate - a percentage or specific sum left to BGF after your family and friends have been taken care of.

A percentage of the estate - you can provide a percentage or specific proportion of your estate to BGF e.g. 5%, 10%, 20% or 50%. If your estate grows or is depreciated by inflation or unforeseen circumstances, your family and friends, as well as other beneficiaries, will not be disadvantaged.

A specific amount of money

A life insurance or superannuation policy - You can take out a life insurance policy on your own life or the life of another nominated person with BGF nominated as the sole beneficiary. Or, you could make the bonuses of your life insurance policy payable to BGF.

Assets such as shares, property, works of art, jewellery etc..

An investment in perpetuity

A life interest clause - you can make a bequest to BGF to take effect after the death of your partner or spouse. They would benefit from your estate for as long as they lived, then the indicated portion would be left to BGF.

Please Remember:

Your solicitor or the Public Trustee will be able to advise you about the correct wording of your bequest so you can be sure the recipient of your bequest uses it in the way you want.

If you are remembering BGF in your Will, we recommend the following wording:

“To give to the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation Incorporated of PO Box 97, Darlinghurst NSW 1300, [insert details of bequest – amount or asset, or either the whole or a proportion of the estate or the residue of the estate] for its general purposes. The receipt of the treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of the Foundation is in absolute discharge to my Executor.”
