THE 2010 BGF BAKE OFF CELEBRATES A VERY TEMPTING FETE

The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation’s longest running community event, the BGF Bake Off, took place in the Paddington Town Hall on Sunday 6 June.

While the final figure is still being calculated, BGF looks to have raised between $30,000-$35,000 in donations with the proceeds going towards improving the quality of life for men, women and children with HIV.

“We were really delighted that people found our fete to be as tempting as we’d hoped. Once again, our community embraced the spirit of the day. Bake Off is always outrageous, colourful and great fun but it also has a serious purpose: to raise money for people living with HIV. We really appreciate the generous support we received from the community for Bake Off.

“BGF would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make the event such a great success: the Bake Off Committee, performers, sponsors, business supporters, volunteers and entrants.”

For the second year running, fete baking was the Bake Off theme. When the oven doors swung open at 2pm, hundreds of people swarmed into the colourfully decorated auditorium of the Paddington Town Hall to take a punt on our lolly jar guessing competition, line up for the kissing booth or purchase some delicious slices of cake from our baking stall.

The judging panel of Longrain Restaurant’s executive chef Martin Boetz, Channel Ten’s Ready, Steady Cook presenter Peter Everett and iconic Sydney drag queen Claire de Lune tasted all 45 entries and then had the tough job of selecting the award-winners in all seven categories.

Glen Lewis of Sweet Art (aka Miss 3D) once again took out the Best Cake (Professional) category for his unique pop culture creation of Gaga McQueen Pop Monster. This year, the judges decided to award a Best Edible in Show prize, which was awarded to Carlos Heng for his entry Mac a What?, a basket of delectable macaroons.

The 2010 BGF Bake Off winners were:

Best in Show : Mac a What? by Carlos Heng
Best Cake (Professional) sponsored by SX magazine
Gaga McQueen Pop Monster by Glen Lewis (Miss 3D)
Best Cake sponsored by the Sydney Star Observer
Carrot, Pecan and Thong Delight by Joyce Maynge
Best Decorated Cake sponsored by the Sydney Props Specialists
Sex in the City by Stefan Bear
Best Tart: Good Old-Fashioned Nutter by Evelyn Perusco
Best Fete Baking: Mac a What? by Carlos Heng
Best Preserves (Jams and Pickles): Scotch Marmalade by Susan Ougham
Best Non-Edible Cake: Fallen Angel by Dean Morrison (Gay Cakes)

Following a host of show-stopping numbers from some of the cream of Sydney’s drag queen entertainers, Trevor Ashley kicked off the exciting and highly competitive auction. Glen’s award-winning cake was sold for $4,000 (the highest bid of the day), while the second-prize-winning cake in the Best Cake (Professional) category – Oh Man! by Dawn Hough – was snapped up for $3,500.

Now that the chill winds of winter have swept in, we also encourage people to be an angel and support the annual BGF Winter Appeal. A winter gift to the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation will help people with HIV to stay in their homes, pay for vital HIV medications, do a training course or even return to work. Every gift, large or small, is really valuable and helps us continue our work. Please help a person in need and make a donation today.
