Film Screening - Desert Migration

In commemoration of World AIDS Day, Bobby Goldsmith Foundation is pleased to partner with Queer Screen - Mardi Gras Film Festival to present three charity screenings of Desert Migration (links below).

Each screening commences at 5:45pm for pre-show drinks/nibbles, movie starts 6:30pm followed by Q&A.

  • Dendy Cinemas Newtown 1 December
  • Star Court Theatre 3 December
  • Pighouse Flicks 4 December

Desert Migration represents a huge number of people who migrated to this desert community burdened with memories of watching their friends die, all believing that a similar fate would befall them.

The film focuses on the lives of gay men living long-term with HIV - people who sought out an oasis in Southern California's Palm Springs. A place where both their homosexuality and health condition was not just tolerated, but understood.

Nutritious Results for BGF’s Eat Well Program

Eat Well, Live Well with HIV  is a  peer-facilitated ten-week practical program designed to teach cooking skills and build strategies to adopt a healthier and more nutritious diet.

Started in 2015 in collaboration with the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre (SHNC), workshops address a range of issues impacting on leading healthy lives for people living with HIV.
For instance, did you know that:
… HIV can cause depletion of naturally occurring vitamins from foods eaten?
… Food insecurity is linked to poor  medication adherence?
Eat Well, Live Well with HIV  helps people rise to the challenges of food insecurity, such as low income, physical mobility, access to transport, knowledge and skills, cooking facilities, homelessness, and mental health.
The program’s success is evident in the feedback participants shared following the courses, including improvement in:
  • quality of life, sleeping, exercising
  • energy and social networks
  • being more in control of their HIV
  • confidence in coping with HIV
  • personal strategies for eating better

BGF Bake Off 2014

Sunday, 3 August 2014

“Thank you to everyone who came to Bake Off 2014 and to those who baked, bought, judged and volunteered.

Bake Off was a huge success because so many people gave so much time, effort and love to make it so.  Without community support we are all lost.  With it, we can all be heroes.

Our special thanks to SkinDNA for sponsoring this year’s Bake Off; Penny Clifford and the Imperial Hotel; Imagination for their Creative work; our exceptional hosts, judges and performers; and to Scalawag Productions and Man Lie Lasers for helping us put on the show.

This year’s Bake Off raised $17,000 that will go directly to provide care and support to the most disadvantaged PLHIV across NSW.  Thank you to everyone for contributing to a fantastic re boot of Bake Off.  Here’s to next year!

Bobby Goldsmith Foundation Honours Ms Ita Buttrose AO OBE

Ita Buttrose AO OBE is a truly exceptional Australian: a legendary media editor, businesswoman, best-selling author, committed community and welfare contributor and 2013 Australian of the Year.

The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation is privileged to welcome Ita Buttrose as an Honorary Life Member in an exclusive ceremony at The Oxford Hotel, Darlinghurst, where BGF was first chartered in 1984.

Bobby Goldsmith’s sister, Wendy White, and Bobby’s final partner, Ken Bryan, will present the Honorary Life Membership citation.

Co-patron of the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG, paid tribute to Ita Buttrose and her response to the outbreak of HIV/AIDS.

“Those of us who are members of sexual minorities will never forget the way in which Ita came forward during our darkest times when the HIV/AIDS epidemic first struck us and our friends. At the times of deepest despair and grief, she stood with us shoulder to shoulder.

“It was not easy in those days. There was ignorance. There was hostility. There was fear. Both in her work as a public communicator, in her presence at so many meetings and in her participation in institutions, she has been a voice of love and reason. That is why she is so deeply appreciated in the GLBT community upon whom in Australia the burden of AIDS first fell.”

Ita Buttrose is the current National President of Alzheimer's Australia, Patron of the Macular Disease Foundation, and Emeritus Director of Arthritis Australia. She received an AO for her services to the community especially in the field of public health education when she spearheaded Australia's HIV/AIDS Education Program, an OBE for her services to journalism, and a Centenary Medal for business leadership.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can enter in the Spring Carnival Bake Off competition?

Anyone! We love a little competition. Why not challenge your work mates and see who's the best baker? Already know you're the best of the best? Enter the competition and prove it!

How do I enter the competition?

Register your cake entry here.

What should I bake?

This year's categories are:

  •         Best Cake
  •         Best Professional Creation
  •         Best Decorated (Edible or Non-Edible). If 10% or more is inedible then this is your category!
  •         Best Cupcake
  •         Best Fete Baking
  •         Best Tart or Pie
  •         Best Preserve

If you need some inspiration, visit our Bake Off Photo Gallery.

How does it all work? I want to win!

Amateur and professional bakers from all over NSW enter the competition, baking according to the categories above. We invited some very talented cooks and bakers to be our guest judges. On the day of the event, our bakers deliver their cakes. Then the judges taste and rate them. Then prizes are awarded

I know what I'm baking. I've registered my entry. What next?

Start your mixers and pre-heat those ovens! And remember, you will need to deliver your creation to the Beresford Hotel (Upstairs) BETWEEN 11:30AM AND 12:30PM ON SUNDAY 18 SEPTEMBER. Our judges need time to taste and rate the cakes so if you're late, you're out! You snooze, you lose, friends! Remember, you'll also need to bring a plate or display for your creation.

My baking stinks, but I want to join the fun! Can I still participate?

We understand. Not everyone can cook, but you can join us at the event anyway! The party starts at 3pm on Sunday, 18 September at the Beresford Hotel (Upstairs) in Surry Hills. You can by-pass the queue by booking a ticket in advance.

I really just want to eat cake.

So do we! Grab a ticket and join us for the fun.

Can I volunteer to help?

Yes! We'd love your help on event day. Just register your interest here. Keep in mind that Bake Off attracts a lot of volunteers and we may not be able to take everyone who is interested. But, we'll do our best!

Auction 2015 - A Resounding Success

Date: 4/6/15

Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) is thrilled to announce that its annual Auction held Upstairs at the Beresford Hotel on Thursday 4th June was a resounding success. The Auction raised over $52,000 profit which will go to provide support and care for people living with HIV in NSW.

Memorable speeches from Ita Buttrose OA OBE and Jose Herrera silenced guests as they listened to the impact HIV continues to have on people’s lives - from diagnosis, stigma, social isolation, living remotely, and as Ita pointed out, the effects of ageing with HIV. They also reminded people of the important services BGF provides and how much their support will improve the health and well-being of people’s lives.

Celebrity hosts Erika Heynatz and Adam Richard kindly donated their time to the cause. As a duo they captured the audience and presented a wonderful and hilarious show.

BGF was honoured to see so many special guests attend, including Catherine McGregor AM and Alex Greenwich MP.

Queen of the Hammer, Romany Brooks professionally auctioned 12 fantastic prizes, including dinner with Ita and Catherine at Rockpool, a catered lunch by Christine Manfield, a weekend at Gwinganna Resort and a week in a 6 star 3 bedroom waterfront apartment on Hamilton Island. A surprise came at the end of the night when the winning raffle prize – a string on freshwater pearls – was given back to be auctioned off.

Mary Kiani took to the stage twice, performing her classic hits Feeling Good and I Image – a number that really had the crowd grooving on the dance floor.

Playing the perfect sets from start to finish, DJ Kate Monroe closed the show with songs that had guests dancing til the night’s end.

Guests praised BGF event organisers and the professional service of staff at the Beresford, saying they had a fantastic night filled with great catering and entertainment.

David Riddell said:  “I’d like to thank again sponsors, Imagination, MAC AIDS Fund and Grey Goose, all prize donors, artists and guests, donors, media supporters, and of course the Beresford Hotel. Also to all the volunteers who donated their time and the staff of Ezybidz for helping make a smooth online silent auction and for their valued help throughout the night. We look forward to another successful Auction in 2016.  In the meantime, stay tuned for BGF’s 28th Bake Off in August … it’s time to start your ovens!”
