Choosing an NDIS provider is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a participant. The right provider can help you build confidence, connect with your community, achieve your goals and live life on your terms.

But with so many providers available, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming.

At Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, we believe finding the right support is about more than services and funding. It’s about finding people who understand you, respect your choices and work alongside you to achieve what’s important in your life.

This guide is designed to help you make an informed decision about the provider that’s right for you – whoever that may be.

Start with your goals, not the provider

Before comparing providers, take some time to think about what matters most to you.

For some people, that might be building independence at home. For others, it could be finding employment, attending social activities, improving health and wellbeing, reconnecting with community or simply having more confidence navigating daily life.

A good NDIS provider should focus on your goals, not just the services they deliver.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want to achieve?
  • What support do I need right now?
  • What would make my life easier, more connected or more fulfilling?
  • What qualities are important to me in a support worker or support coordinator?

The clearer you are about your goals, the easier it will be to find a provider that can help you achieve them.

The best support starts with a relationship

NDIS support is often built around ongoing relationships. You may work closely with your provider, support workers or support coordinator for months or even years.

That’s why it’s important to find people you feel comfortable with.

When speaking to a potential provider, ask yourself:

  • Do they listen to me?
  • Do they take the time to understand my goals?
  • Do I feel respected?
  • Do I feel comfortable asking questions?
  • Do they communicate clearly and honestly?

The right provider should see you as a person first, not a funding package or service booking.

Questions to ask before choosing a service provider

Once you’ve identified a few providers, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Some useful questions include:

  • Do you have experience supporting people with needs similar to me?
  • What experience do you have supporting LGBTQIA+ communities?
  • Who will be my main contact?
  • How do you support people to achieve their goals?
  • How flexible are your services?
  • What happens if my needs change?
  • What are your fees and cancellation policies?
  • How do you match participants with support workers?

Remember, you’re interviewing them just as much as they’re meeting you.

Find a provider that understands you

For many people, finding the right provider is also about finding a service that understands their identity, experiences and community.

This can be particularly important for LGBTQIA+ people, people living with HIV, people from culturally diverse backgrounds and others who may have experienced stigma or barriers when accessing support.

You should never have to explain or defend who you are in order to receive quality care.

For many LGBTQIA+ people, feeling safe, respected and able to be themselves is an important part of quality support. Finding a provider that understands your identity, community and lived experience can make a meaningful difference to your confidence, wellbeing and sense of belonging.

Look for a provider that:

  • Treats you with dignity and respect
  • Values diversity and inclusion
  • Creates safe and welcoming environments
  • Understands the communities you belong to
  • Supports your choices and independence

Feeling understood can be just as important as the support itself.

Support coordination – helping you make the most of your plan

If your NDIS plan includes support coordination funding, a support coordinator can help you understand and implement your plan, connect you with services and build confidence managing your support.

A good support coordinator doesn’t just arrange services. They help you navigate the system, solve problems, build capacity and work towards your long-term goals.

The best support coordinators empower participants to make informed choices and take greater control over their support.

How BGF approaches support

At BGF, we believe support should be built around you.

Our disability support and support coordination are designed to be flexible, inclusive and person-centred.

We are particularly proud of our experience supporting:

  • LGBTQIA+ communities
  • People living with HIV
  • Older people
  • People with complex needs
  • Individuals looking for inclusive and affirming care

Our team understands that many people are looking for more than just a provider. They want support from people who genuinely understand their experiences and create environments where they feel safe, welcome and empowered to live life, their way.

Whether you choose BGF or another provider, the most important thing is finding a support coordinator who understands your needs and helps you get the most from your NDIS plan.

Choosing a provider that’s right for you

There’s no single ‘best’ NDIS provider. The right choice is the provider that understands your goals, respects your choices and helps you move forward with confidence.

Take your time, ask questions and trust your instincts.

Great support isn’t just about what a provider does. It’s about how they make you feel and whether they help you live life your way.
