Every year, the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras transforms Sydney into a celebration of both pride and protest. In 2026, the theme Ecstatica reminds us that queer joy has always been an act of defiance – something fierce, communal and deeply felt.

That energy also sits at the heart of BGF’s work too.
For more than 40 years, BGF and Mardi Gras have grown alongside each other as part of Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ story. One brings us together in euphoric rebellion; the other transforms that sense of community into everyday support for people living with HIV.
Both were born from the same refusal to let fear, stigma or silence define us.
HIV is no longer the crisis it once was, but it remains a reality for many in our community. And for some – especially those facing housing stress, mental health challenges, financial hardship or isolation – living well requires more than medication. It requires the kind of care, stability and support that only our community can provide.
That’s where BGF comes in. We provide practical help, financial counselling, disability support, health and wellbeing programs and spaces where people can reconnect after periods of disconnection. In many ways, this is another form of rebellion – standing beside people living with HIV and making sure that dignity, safety and belonging are always within reach.
Mardi Gras reminds us that celebration and care aren’t opposites – they’re what keep our community moving forward.
This year, Mardi Gras say “This is our party. This is our power.”
At BGF, we see that power every day – in the resilience, connection and ways in which our community continues to show up for one another.
And as we celebrate Mardi Gras and everything it represents, it’s also a moment to remember that support is here whenever it’s needed. Whether you’re navigating a new diagnosis, rebuilding your confidence or simply looking for someone to walk alongside you, BGF is ready when you are.
