What is disability?

Disability can be defined in many ways, but it generally refers to a condition or set of conditions that limit a person’s movements, senses or activities. Disabilities can be physical, intellectual, psychiatric, sensory, neurological or a combination of these. Types of disabilities

  • Physical disabilities affect a person’s mobility and physical capacity
  • Intellectual disabilities impact cognitive functioning and learning abilities
  • Psychiatric disabilities include mental health conditions that affect a person’s thinking, feeling and behaviour
  • Sensory disabilities affect one or more senses, such as sight or hearing
  • Neurological disabilities involve the nervous system and can affect movement, communication and other functions.

Living with a disability in Australia

Australia is committed to supporting all people living with a disability through various initiatives and programs. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plays a crucial role in providing support and services to all people living with a disability.

The NDIS is also committed to ensuring that LGBTQIA+ people with disabilities have equal access to its services. The NDIS LGBTQIA+ Disability Strategy aims to:

  • Create an environment that is socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually safe
  • Ensure that all participants are treated with dignity and respect and that their identities are relationships are acknowledged and respected
  • Recognise the unique challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ people living with a disability, including those from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

  • People with Disability Australia is the national peak disability rights and advocacy organisation that champions and celebrates all people with a disability
  • SA.GOV.AU provides information on services, education, employment, recreation and support options for people living with a disability in SA
  • Services Australia connects people with a range of services including Medicare and other health services as well as support services for people living with a disability and their carers
  • Service NSW offers people living with a disability in NSW access to financial assistance, transport options and accessibility resources
